Photograph of a man ( Arno ) standing in a small clearing on a sunny day. He is looking up into the canopy ( out of view ) with his arms folded from within a bright spot of sun.
Title: Arno and the Trees
Location: Near San Francisco
Country: USA
Subject notes: The redwoods of western California, Sequoia sempervirens, are the tallest trees in the world, can live for more than 2000 years, and are one of the few species that is able to live long enough to wait for a suitable habitat to return around them for proper mass seeding. In the meantime, when a tree falls down, it becomes a nursery for many young trees that grow from shoots around the old tree's trunk forming a ring around the old base. In this way, though several centuries can pass by without much reproduction by seed, it is only a portion of their lifespan, and thus of little importance to the survival of the species.
